Autumn/Winter hair trends to think about now

Although it’s probably a bit early to be thinking about anything to do with autumn/winter now as we are still in the throngs of summer, it’s always worthwhile having a look at what hair trends are coming up, you can start to make a transition into those styles as we exit summer. Hair trends for many of us are not always the extremes we see on the catwalks or in the salon hair magazines but as with fashion you can pick bits out to suit, such as styles or colours, and new techniques that come out for styling such with your ghd hair straighteners or curling wands.

This summer we had poker straight locks and messy beach babe looks on the catwalk, however next season it’s all about the volume and its bag in a ‘big’ way with lots and lots of volume no matter what length your hair is! If you have long hair, you will be lucky this next season as you will have lots of looks to play around with, creating large volumous hair with a retro twist, think old Hollywood as well as sleek shiny lock that have lots of texture and movement with gentle waves.

Bob’s are in for winter still so if you have been sporting one this summer why not give it a bit of an update with a few added extra layers to create texture and volume, you can use your ghd straighteners to create definition with small curls.

How to achieve Celebrity curls

When you see celebrities with their perfectly styled locks it can make any of us green with envy, however it’s not as hard as you think to get those big shiny curls yourself, all you need is a few essential tools which most of you will already have such as ghd hair straighteners, volumising mousse and hair spray.

Once you have washed and conditioned your hair apply a small amount volumising mousse to your roots and a spritz of protector spray to your hair before you blow dry it, brushing out from the roots with a round barrelled brush.

After your hair is completely dry you need to section off your hair, place your thumbs at your ears and section off your hair until the meet at the back of your head and clip up the top section out of the way. Taking individual sections place the ghd straightener in at the roots, rotate it 180° and glide it through the hair until reaching the end, then as each section falls catch it and loosely twist it around your finger to define the curl, continue throughout the whole bottom section and spray in place with hairspray.

For the top section of your hair follow with the same technique, for soft curls that don’t start at the top of your head simply straighten the hair and rotate 180° towards the end, and spray with hairspray for maximum hold.

Everybody’s hair is affected by changes in weather and environment, and as much as we may love the summer sun it can leave you with dry and damaged hair, like your skin you need to be aware of the effects of UV damage. Your hair colour, style and health can be affected on top of that the build up of chlorine, sand and lotion can also dry out your hair and alter the fabric, leaving it straw-like and unmanageable. As well as that heat damage from constant styling using your blow-dryer and ghd hair straighteners will add extra damage.

Now obviously it’s not possible to keep away from the sun ot completely cut out styling however there are steps to take that can help prevent damage, you can get specialist shampoo and conditioners as well as styling products and treatments designed to help combat the damage caused by sun exposure and styling. When you see models bounding down the catwalk with their hair bouncing glamorously with each step but keeping perfectly in place you find it’s a look that you want to recreate yourself but often think unless you’re a salon professional it can’t be done. Well think again, you can create great catwalk looks with your ghd hair straighteners.

For bouncy stay in place curls the best way to start is to blow dry your hair and as always remember to use a thermal protector spray to protect your hair from the heat, and brush your hair away from your face keeping your hair as voluminous as possible. Before you section off your hair gently mist it with ghd creation spray to help with hold, and then separate your hair into two sections at ear level, clip away top section.

Place your ghd straighteners in at the root of a smaller section of hair, rotate it 180° and gently glide the straightener through the hair until reaching the end, when each section falls loosely twist it around your finger to define the curl. Follow same directions for the top part of your hair and then finish with polishing serum, pulling through each section to separate and define each curl and hold with hairspray.

Summer time hair

Now we are heading into summer it’s time for a change for your hair but you don’t need to put your ghd hair straighteners away for the summer styles. The dark colours from winter should be fading out for lighter shades of brown and blonde with creamy caramel and warm honey tones to bright and platinum white.

Summer styles mean lots of texture either shiny and sleek, chunky and textured, braided and crimped and big blow outs. On the catwalks we saw retro waves on the girls of Dior and Versace as well as braids at Antonio Beradi and surfer chic at Alexander Wang. All these are easily recreated with your ghd straighteners.

How to achieve curls

Not everyone is lucky enough to have naturally curly hair however for those who don’t, you can now easily create a bountiful head of curls with your ghd hair straighteners:

1. Firstly you need to section your hair, to do this you place your thumbs above your ears, draw a line around the back of your head until your thumbs meet, then gather hair above your thumbs and clip it out of the way.

2. Now depending on the thickness of your hair, separate it into 3-6 section, (the thicker the hair the more sections you will have). Lightly mist each section with ghd creation spray for longer lasting curls, then for each section place the ghd straighteners in at the roots, rotate it 180° and slowly glide the styler slowly through the hair until reaching the end. Then catch the sections of hair and wrap around your finger to increase the curl.

3. Follow those steps with the remainder of the hair until you reach you desired parting.

4. If you want the disheveled look as seen on the SS/10 catwalks then all you need to do is run your fingers through the curls to separate and define and to finish off lightly mist with ghd fixation spray and scrunch with your hands for added lift.

5. If you want a tighter curl, simply glide the straighteners slower through the hair.

Sexy holiday hair

For the sexy beach bomb hair that big this year use your ghd hair straighteners to create the look.

Firstly before you blow dry your hair apply ghd thermal protector spray to protect your hair from the heat of the hair dryer and use a barrel brush from the root to create some volume. Section of your hair in to 4 parts, then starting on the back left section take all the hair and twist together, run your ghd straighteners over the twisted hair then clip back up, repeat this step with the other 3 sections. Once cool remove the clips and shake through spritzing with ghd sea spray to give a matt texture to your hair.

And then you can enjoy the sun with sexy holiday hair.

Edgy hair styles as seen on the catwalks

This year hairstylists to the designers have been creating edgy styles for the shows with many going for retro yet modern, Bumble and bumble lead stylist Rolando Beauchamp who was creating styles for Cynthia Steffe shows gave models a clip-on faux bang, he said “We’re doing a really thick fringe, but the texture on the hair is dirty, like two-day old hair,”. The look was going for the slept in texture with a messy-sexy hairstyle that was retro.

Others also followed suit with models at Erin Fetherston sporting long straight hair and shiny bangs. This look is probably one of the easiest looks to create from the catwalk shows using ghd straightens to get a sleek smooth look. This look was also sported at Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B show with models super-shiny hair with shiny and slightly rounded bangs. Thanks to a whole host of celebrities like Courtney Cox, Kim Kardashian, Michelle Williams and more black hair has really come into its own over the last few years and has moved away from a more gothic Morticia Addams colour.

The A/W catwalks were awash with raven hues moving black closer to the top near blonde and brunette for top hair colours, black complements a cool complexion and both blue and grey eyes gain intensity as well as olive complexion with deep brown eyes.
