Read our essential guide to executive dressing; after all style doesn’t stop when you’re at work.

To get ahead, get a suit. Not just any old suit though, invest in the best you can afford and experiment with texture. This season’s fabrics are sublime, try fine mohair for a touch of class or a heavy gabardine – see what suits your shape and experiment – you might be surprised at the outcome.

An ill-fitting suit can really damage your image. If you’re climbing the corporate ladder then it pays to invest and we’re not just talking designer clothing here, many of the high-street stores have top-end ranges that really do give the couture brands a run for their money. As before, the important thing is to try as many different styles, colours and cuts as you can to find the perfect one for your build and to compliment the image you’re trying to project in the workplace.

Firstly, get properly measured: neck, shoulders, sleeves, chest, waist and inseam measurements should be taken before you start. If you’re a novice at power dressing then start with the basics; choose a neutral colour like a rich navy or a subtle charcoal grey – brown can look dated and black is better for the evening. Choose a jacket with vents for a more tailored look, resulting in a better fit. For the trouser, pleats should be avoided; a flat front is undeniably flattering whereas a pleat draws attention to an area you may want to avoid.

Double-breasted suits are dated and not the best choice if you want to make a good impression at work. Stick with single breasted for clean lines and an unfussy silhouette.

Executive clothing is a tricky business, so follow our advice and you won’t go far wrong.
